Domotic at Home: The Smart Home

What was once relegated to the minds of science-fiction writers and “Jetsons” cartoon has now become a reality. Our homes are literally becoming smarter.

Domotics, taken from the Latin word for home “domus”, translates as home robotics. The emerging field of domotics is an umbrella terms used for all phases of smart home technology.  Sophisticated controls that automate temperature, lighting, security and sensors all fall within the domotics category. Incredible advances have allowed home automation technology to consolidate many of the functions of everyday household appliances and systems.

For example, thermostats now can be controlled via remote control or even your cell phone.  Imagine you’re driving in from dinner and you would like to warm up your house to cozy up when you get home. No problem. Not only is this convenient but these new “smart” thermostats can also curtail any possible damage to your home by notifying you when temperatures get too low (to prevent pipes from freezing) or too high (to protect vulnerable pets, plants, etc).

Not long ago, one home theater system could be attached to a plethora of remote controls. It was hard to know which corresponded to what device and in what order they should be turned on. A domotic remote takes the frustration away and allows you to enjoy watching a new release on blue-ray, played on your high-definition television with surround sound in just one click.

Domotics have also found their way out to the yard. Irrigation systems are getting “smarter” with some turning on only when it isn’t raining and can even be programmed to turn on when there is motion in the yard during unwanted times.

Security systems have also benefitted from domotics. Your home security system will now call to alert you of a suspicious situations, allow you to shut your garage door remotely from your office, unlock the front door when you’re upstairs and even alert you when there is water in the basement.

Now that’s smart!
