Golfing in Puerto Vallarta and Riviera Nayarit

For decades, Puerto Vallarta had quietly been a favorite destination for golfers in the know, but it wasn’t until 2006 when the PGA held the Puerto Vallarta Blue Agave Gold Classic that Vallarta became a premier international golf destination.

Now, visitors flock to Puerto Vallarta and Rivieria Nayarit to enjoy golfing on some of the most challenging and gorgeous courses in the world.

The Vista Vallarta Club de Golf, designed by Jack Nicklaus, was the site of the PGA Blue Agave Gold Classic, which at the time had the largest purse of any tournament ever played in Mexico. The course offers stunning views of the both the BanderasBay and the Sierra Madre mountains and provides a challenging 18 hole game.

Also at the Vista Vallarta Club de Golf is another 18 hole course designed by golf legend, Tom Weiskopf, which hosted the 2002 EMC World Golf Championship. The Weiskopf course is well-known for the masterful way in which the course design has integrated the dense jungles, deep ravines and swift creeks of the terrain.

Conveniently close to the Puerto Vallarta Marina and Hotel Zone is the Marina Vallarta Club de Golf, which was rated one of the “Best Places to Play 2008/2009” by Golf Digest. The lush 18 hole course is home to dozens of large iguanas and crocodiles have been known to lazily stroll the greens before being wrangled by Club staff.

Mayan Resorts Golf Nuevo Vallarta is another Jack Nicklaus designed 18 hole course. The course mixes 1950’s style greens with challenging obstacles such as sand traps, jungle vegetation and undergrowth to offer a challenging game while surrounded by a beautiful natural landscape.

Named as one of the top 10 best golf courses in Mexico by both Golf Guide Magazine and Golf in Mexico Magazine in 2008, the El Tigre Golf and Country Club in Paradise Village, Nuevo Vallarta, has not only a spectacular and demanding course but has one of most well-appointed club houses in the area.

Also within an hours drive from the Puerto Vallarta International Airport are the 18 hole Flamingos Golf Course in Bucerias and the beautifully groomed Four Seasons Golf Course in Punta Mita which is reserved for hotel guests and club members only.
