The old adage “out with the old and in with the new” seems to be particularly prescient at the beginning of a new year. Broken resolutions and empty promises aside, a new year ushers in exciting new trends to slough off the old and bask in the new.

In interior design, this is certainly the case. New opportunities to update your home present themselves.  Small changes can reconfigure a space. A pop of color can change the whole dynamic of a room.

In 2012, interior design trends point to fun, minimalist design, innovative shapes and eco-friendly. Bold splashes of color are trending, namely vibrant aquas, grassy greens, oranges and yellows. These bold pops of colors enliven a living space while adding a sleek and sophisticated modern feel.

Minimalism has as its goal an understanding of what is essential. A good purge is often times necessary and extremely warranted, particularly when it comes to unnecessary eye-sores that we’ve been hanging on to and bulky furniture that serves no real purpose. These trinkets will be replaced with sleeker and more functionally interesting home accessories.

Bowls, lighting figures, chairs and other accessories will be re-imagined into new shapes, some wiggly and, most, unorthodox.

Eco-design has been around for the last decade or so, but suffered a bit of a set back from a slowing global economy. Eco-design, however, now has fresh legs as renewable materials have been refastened.  For example, recycled wood is now being used to create dining room tables and coffee tables.

Sustainability in design is no longer relegated to a small contingent but is becoming main-stream as people are becoming increasingly aware of its importance.
