On the stage of home decoration, lighting is often the understudy. Furniture, architectural elements, high-end finishes take top billing, leaving lighting out of the spotlight.  Lighting is a decorative element that though, not immediately apparent, can change the entire dynamic of a room.

Proper lighting can increase drama, function and style of a space.  Adding a mix of recessed lighting, chandeliers, undercabinet lights, floor lamps, and other lighting helps add dimension.  For example, the use of recessed lighting works well for illuminating a general area, while undercabinet lights are perfect for kitchen working areas and uplights placed on top of cabinets can beautifully showcase a ceiling .

Lighting can also be used to enhance artwork. Installing eyeball, adjustable recessed lighting or track lighting that can be redirected, beautifully showcase a work of art.  In addition, small fixtures made exclusively for lighting art are readily available at local home centers and simple to install.

An often simple way to modernize and help create a more livable space is by installing dimmer switches into already existing lamps and light fixtures. Dimmers have the dual purpose of achieving appropriate mood lighting for any context and also saving energy.

Metal can up-lights are great for use in dark corners, behind or inside potted plants, or on top of an armoire.  Can up-lights only need to be plugged in, but should stay hidden so the light is the only effect you see.

Outdoor lighting should alternatively be subtle, dramatic and practical.  Uplights will help feature that prominent tree in your landscaping, while outdoor can lights can illuminate an entrance.  Installing a motion sensor on outdoor lights can ensure that you never enter a space in the dark.
