The architecture of Luis Barragan

With its long and diverse history, Mexico’s architecture has been illustrious and, often, astoundingly sophisticated. One of the most influential modern architects in Mexico’s history, Luis Barragán was born in Guadalajara in 1902 to a well-to-do, aristocratic family. Trained as an engineer, Barragán soon became enchanted with architecture.

Barragán’s lack of training in architecture seemingly served him well. He would later note that he felt freed from the rigidity of many formally trained architects and as an engineer, was able to apply instinctive solutions to design problems.

Initially influenced by the Modernist Movement with its clean lines and utilitarianism, Barragán soon broke off from strictly modernist philosophy, striving instead for “emotional architecture”.

The goal of his work was to emote serenity and, as stated by Barragán’s mentor, French intellectual and acclaimed landscape architect Ferdinand Bac, create spaces and buildings that had the capacity to “bewitch”. And bewitch he did.

Barragán’s creative style continued to morph with diverse influences impacting his style.  His native country’s architecture, particularly the solitude and serenity seen in Mexico’s sweeping haciendas, graceful monasteries and convents imbued his work. Though never particularly prolific, Barragán’s stamp on the world of architecture is firmly evident.

Some of his most important includes residential areas such as the beautiful Jardines del Pedregal, the famed Lomas Verdes and Arboledas and Torres de Satélite, whose iconic towers welcomes visitors and residents alike.

All of these developments were marked by the signature Barragán features, namely serene landscaping, incorporation of natural elements such as rock and water and a sophisticated simplicity in design. Barragán’s studio and house  was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004.

Further cementing his illustrious career, Barragán was awarded the Pritzker Prize (Architecture’s Oscars) in 1980.
